How do I know if IRS received my mailed tax return?
If you file your taxes by mail, you can track your tax return and get a confirmation when the IRS has received it. To do so, use USPS Certified Mail or another mail service that has tracking or delivery confirmation services.
If no Proof of Mailing Sender's Receipt or Electronic Return Receipt is needed, simply attach the USPS Form 3800 to your mailpiece and the USPS Form 3811 if a Physical Return Receipt was requested, and hand it to your mail carrier or place in a USPS Postal Receiving Box.
An IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter (VNF) will provide proof from the IRS that there is no record of a filed tax form (1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) for the year you have requested. A VNF does not provide proof that you were not required to file, only that you did not file.
Certified Mail is a USPS service providing the sender with an official receipt showing proof that an item was mailed. A Return Receipt may also be purchased, providing the sender with verification of delivery via email or postcard.
If you filed on paper, it may take 6 months or more to process your tax return. For service delay details, see Status of Operations. The IRS issues more than 9 out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days. However, it's possible your tax return may require additional review and take longer.
If you file a complete and accurate paper tax return, your refund should be issued in about six to eight weeks from the date IRS receives your return. If you file your return electronically, your refund should be issued in less than three weeks, even faster when you choose direct deposit.

Certified mail provides a mailing receipt to the sender as proof that a package was sent on a certain date, as well as electronic verification of delivery upon request. Signature confirmation provides the sender with the recipient's signature, name, delivery date, and delivery address.
Fill in the Certified Mail® Receipt (Form PS 3800) and attach it to the front of your envelope. Then pay for the postage and Certified Mail fees at the counter. The clerk will stamp the PS 3800 form and give a portion back to you as Proof of Acceptance.
For dependents, CAAs are allowed to authenticate the passport and birth certificate. For all other documents, you are required to attach the original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency.
What does the IRS consider a valid receipt?
Documents for purchases include the following: Canceled checks or other documents reflecting proof of payment/electronic funds transferred. Cash register tape receipts. Credit card receipts and statements.
We'll ask you to send us copies of your documents to prove that you can claim credits such as: Proof of relationship. Proof of residency. Other documents referenced in your letter or notice.

A certificate of mailing only proves that mail was shipped on a certain date, but it does not prove or confirm that the mail was delivered. Certified mail provides proof that the mail was shipped AND delivered.
Mailers typically use certified mail when they need to provide proof that a mailpiece was sent and received. The most common uses of Certified Mail are to send tax returns, bank documents, and time-sensitive communications with debtors or creditors.
A Certificate Of Mailing provides evidence that you sent an item when you say you did. This official record only shows the date your mail was accepted. It does not provide record of delivery, proof of mailing, or insure items against loss. The Postal Service® does not keep copies of Certificate of Mailing receipts.
Available on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app, Where's My Refund allows taxpayers to track their refund through three stages: Return received.
No. Once your return is accepted by the IRS, it can't be rejected. If anything, they may send a letter or notice requesting additional support if needed. The IRS operations are limited during the Covid-19 pandemic.
If the IRS is reviewing your return, it may have questions about your wages and withholding, or credits or expenses shown on your tax return. The review process could take anywhere from 45 to 180 days, depending on the number and types of issues the IRS is reviewing.
Proof of Delivery (also known as POD) shows that an item has been delivered. BusinessDictionary.com has defined Proof of Delivery as a: “Receipt signed by a consignee or recipient, confirming delivery of a shipment in good order and condition“
A Proof of Delivery (POD) letter, which has a copy of the signature, can be obtained by email at no additional expense. Customers can request the POD by going to the USPS Tracking® website on USPS.com, entering the article barcode number of the mailpiece, and requesting a POD via email.
What happens if no one signs for certified mail?
The delivery person can't leave Certified Mail without a signature. If no one is home to receive it, the postal worker will leave a note that a delivery attempt was made. USPS only makes one delivery attempt. After that, the carrier returns the letter or package to the nearest post office.
Certified mail must be signed for. If the recipient is home when the mail carrier comes, he signs for the mail and gets it into his hands right then.
Certified mail provides the sender proof that the shipment was mailed and when it's delivered. On the other hand, registered mail provides the sender package updates from every step of the shipment process. This distinction means you have more security knowing that more eyes and hands are looking out for your parcel.
Select your mail class –
Keep in mind that only First Class and Priority Mail are options when you use a Certified Mail form or envelope, and that USPS regulations prohibit reusing forms already used for mailing.
Certified Mail is an extra service offered by the USPS that provides you with verification that a mail piece or package was delivered. The service fee is $4.00, whether you send a small letter or a large box.
